Revolving Sky is currently paused. I preferred to focus on a more « reachable » project for the following months and hopefully be able to come back to Revolving Sky with sufficient ressources to make it happen properly. Check http://www.devouringstars.com
1. the game
Revolving Sky is set around Joro, a giant gas planet, an amazingly large ball of constantly evolving currents, crushing pressure and terrible storms. You play an alien crew on a ship adapted to such an hostile environment. Your people is accustomed to living in hard environment like that. But Joro is an exception. For thousands of years it has been abandoned, its memories washed away. It’s a taboo place, a no man’s land. At least that’s what you thought when you first landed on Joro, before discovering the hidden cities and hearing about a strange little planet called earth.
2. the gameplay
We really want Revolving Sky to be about three things : exploration, crafting and action. Think about something between FTL and Out there, but with a really specific crafting mechanic.
a. Exploration In the game you’re free to go in every direction around the planet. The environment will change and evolve depending on the point your aiming at, triggering different cities, ennemies and action as you go along. For example, you will learn in a city that you have to « follow the arrow » in order to find a really useful schematics fo
r your ship. The arrow is actually a constellation. Go in its direction to find your way.
b. Crafting The alien ship is 100% crafted. You will be able to « draw » the different modules and plug them to your ship. Depending on this structure, the modules will have different functions in-game. A large part of the exploration will be about finding these structures. Some parts of the game won’t be available if you don’t have the suitable module plugged to your ship.
c. Action You will encounter ennemies on your way. If the ennemies catch up with you (it heavily depends on your reactors modules), then you will have to fight them and board their ship with your crew. There too, the different modules of your ship will be helpful.
3. the project
Right now two people are working on the game: Antonio La Barbera (art) and myself, François Alliot (design, code). I worked on the prototype for quite some time now, as a hobby and by-project. I’m an independant game designer living in London. Recently Antonio joined in to work on the main graphic elements (the cities and the main characters). Antonio is an excellent artist. Check his work here : http://dropr.com/antoniolabarbera
Our first aim is to provide you with an alpha version of the game. As you may see in the video, everything is there to actually bootstrap a prototype of the game (except for sound design, but it’s on its way). We expect fo finish this first version this summer, and maybe launch a kickstarter in september. A proper one, with gameplay elements.
What do you think about the project? Any suggestion on how to make it happen properly will be much appreciated !
